We have an “Open” event on Sunday March 13, 2016 at Umstead South. That is the Reedy Creek Section accessible from I-40 Exit 287 (Harrison Ave). Register at the large picnic shelter to the north-west of the parking lot.
Everyone is welcome. Starts are from Noon to 2pm, and the course closes and controls are picked up at 3pm.
Don’t forget that daylight saving starts Sunday, so make sure your watch is set to the right time.
We will have courses for everyone from beginner to expert. There is a remote start for the brown course, with a fairly level 1.5km of trail and road walking to the start.
There will a beginners class at 12:30pm to introduce newcomers to the sport. The course covers the procedures for orienteering, as well as an introduction to the map and compass.
The yellow course requires some off-trail orienteering and has several places where you should consider off-trail route choices. If there is interest, I will run a short introduction to route choices after the main class.
As the weather warms up, remember that we have ticks here in NC. Take appropriate precautions. Check your outdoor supplier for something like Sawyer Permethrin Spray (which goes on your cloths not your body), so some other suitable repellent. I had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever last year and it isn’t funny.
Help with control pickup is always appreciated.
Ian.
