Orienteering Raleigh NC

Backwoods Orienteering Klub, founded November 15, 1978 sponsors events and teaches orienteering in the North Carolina piedmont, around Raleigh, NC.

We invite you to try orienteering with us. Everyone is welcome at all our events. We always offer beginning, intermediate, advanced and expert courses (routes through the woods) at every Regular event.

Volunteers Needed For the Upcoming A meet


Sycamore Scramble: February 20 & 21, 2010 – Umstead North (Enter
from NC 70, gates open @ 7:00 am both days)

**Experienced orienteers are needed for Sector Runners.

No experience necessary for any other job.

A light lunch will be provided on Saturday.

Volunteers will be able to compete and may register for the event at the reduced youth rate.
(Just write a note on the entry form saying you are a worker and do
NOT pay online. Ruth Bromer, registrar, will fix your fees.)

Volunteers will be able to purchase an event shirt at a reduced rate.
Please volunteer at least 2 hours each day.

Each job area has a team captain who will explain what you need to do.

Note: Any volunteer can do their run the weekend before the event.  (Feb. 13 &14 2010)
Sector runners, start, and finish volunteers choosing to compete must
do their personal run the weekend before the event.

Sector runners should also have time available to hang some flags on the Friday
before the event, 2/19/2010.

Most other volunteers will be able to schedule their work time and also run the weekend of the meet.

Child Care

Take care of a few kids (possibly 4-5) while
the parents are orienteering. Kids’ supplies will be needed and
will be paid for by BOK. Not all kids at one time.

Maximum time range
8:15 am – 1:30pm for Middle

Maximum time range 1:30-4:30 for Sprint. The
times should be much shorter.

Maximum time range 8:30 am – 2:30pm but
should be shorter.

Start Area

Worker

Set up and take down
of start areas .

Manage flow of
competitors, work start lists, event clock, water, control
description supplies, check, clear, and start boxes, supply of
maps.

Shelter for rain (if
needed).

needed to move start for Sprint event.

Food Worker

Assist with getting
food supplies, help serve lunch on Saturday, ensure fruit and
water are at all finish.

(Sam’s or BJ’s members may be needed to help
purchase food).

Sprint finish closes at 4:30 pm.

Course closes at 2:30 pm.

Finish Area

Worker

Set up and take down of finish area, clock,
finish boxes, keep finishers in order through chute, paper back
up, shelter for rain (if needed).
