We are only a few days away from getting iron-clad approval from the National Park Service to have an expert-level event on the west side of Shackleford Banks, NC. At this point, we have received verbal assurances from the park, and so it seems safe to make travel and/or lodging arrangements now. For many, it will be easist to book a short-term rental in Beaufort, where the morning ferry to Shackleford departs. Note that we have also been approved for an event at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park on Sunday, 06 Feb. So it might make sense for many of our members to book a coastal rental for both Friday and Saturday nights, and then swing by the Cliffs event on your way back to the Triangle on Sunday.
Once the Shackleford event receives offical approval, I will post complete details about it, including transportation options, schedules, and courses information.
This area offers stunningly technical dune terrain, beautiful ocean vistas, and dozens of wild banker horses. As promised last year, in addition to typical expert-level courses (brown, green, red), I will also offer a special map for the most elite navigators. This map will use a 1m contour interval (instead of 2.5), and will not depict vegetation. (The elite course will not have obvious route options that go through impassible vegetation.)
Write Dave at dw.orienteer@gmail if you need information about planning your trip to this special event.
