Orienteering Raleigh NC

Backwoods Orienteering Klub, founded November 15, 1978 sponsors events and teaches orienteering in the North Carolina piedmont, around Raleigh, NC.

We invite you to try orienteering with us. Everyone is welcome at all our events. We always offer beginning, intermediate, advanced and expert courses (routes through the woods) at every Regular event.

Shackleford Banks, Results

The chilly Saturday morning in Beaufort turned downright cold as the ferry sped around the east side of Carrot Island to take our group to Shackleford Banks, the western tip of Cape Lookout National Seashore.  As the steady cold wind blew unfettered off the water onto our start location, everyone thought and thought again about how to stay warm while on their course.  Stephanie brought and shared cookies, and once again was able to embarrass the event director by leading an impromptu verse of ‘Happy Birthday’.  Then we were off.

Once among the dunes, out of the wind, conditions became much more agreeable for orienteering.  We all had to contend in some way with the enduring banker horses, steadily grazing, nearly oblivious to our frenetic and transient activities.  Well-planned routes required unexpected detours around the wild horses.

The complex, nonlinear relief made navigating by contours extremely hard, and most had to rely more heavily on careful bearing and distance estimation.  Some of our best runners were challenged further by a map that left off most of the vegetation.  This made awful control #3 particularly evasive, albeit memorable, for many of our best competitors.   

Back on the mainland, we crewed-up for happy hour and dinner, overlooking  beautiful Beaufort harbor.  Jupiter tagged behind a gorgeous sunset, and the temperatures were as cold as the camaraderie was warm. 

Shout-out to Matt Craig, who (a) ran warm-up clothes from the start to the finish before his start; (b) won the elite-level course with a faster time than the winner of red; and (c) picked-up the furthest controls.
