ARDF Sprint at Dix Park Feb 21 – Results

It was cold and windy, but the sun was out so we could pretend it was warmer. Charles set an excellent course – it even required map reading – which isn’t easy at Dix.

Some people did both the short and long course. The short course was a subset of the long course. An asterisk * after their name indicated they did that course after doing their other course.

Optimum route for all 12 transmitters: S-S3-S1-S4-S5-S2-Spec-F4-F5-F2-F1-F3-F
Optimum route for the shorter 3-fox route: S-S4-S1-S5-Spec-F4-F5-F3-F

Optimum Long Course
Optimum Short Course

The white forest wasn’t as open as mapped, so by going F5, F4, F3 you could do all your running in open field at an additional length of about 90m

Below is the invitation to the event

Because the Schenck Forest event is being rescheduled, we are going to have an ARDF, “Radio Orienteering”, Sprint event at Dorothea Dix Park.

Starts from 11am – 2pm. Course closes at 3:30pm

IF YOU NEED TO RENT A RECEIVER CHOOSE A TIME SLOT OF 1PM OR LATER.
All the receivers have been rented so we need time for the early people to return the receiver for you to use.

The start location is at the gazebo on Umstead Dr. just west of Hunt Dr. (35.771244, -78.661299) You can park in the lot just west of the gazebo.

Register here, and sign up for your half hour arrival time slot and plan to arrive any time during that half hour.

We won’t have a course for beginners, but if you are curious about ARDF ,you are welcome to show up anytime and we will show you how to use the receiver and you can try finding two of the controls that will be on all the time. Bring your own headphones (no bluetooth).

ARDF Sprint is a particularly challenging event because the transmitters are only on for 12 seconds before they hand off to the next transmitter. The good news is that the whole cycle is only one minute long, so it comes back on in 48 seconds.

The ARDF sprint consists of two groups of 5 transmitters, a mandatory “spectator” transmitter that broadcasts continuously between the two groups, and a finish beacon that also stays on continuously. To qualify as finishing, you must get at least one transmitter from the first group, the spectator transmitter, at least one control from the second group, and then the finish beacon in that order. Results are calculated first on how many controls you found and then on total time.

Here is an article with more detail on how to use the receiver and the different ARDF events. Scroll down to see the section on sprints.
