  • Results – 2m Classic ARDF Event at Umstead North 2/20/22

Everything went smoothly.  We had the full 750m exclusion zone around the start.  Not usual for a local event, but good practice for the Champs. (Coming up April 5-10 in Quantico VA.)  We used our new rental 2m Receivers again.  The transmitter closest to the finish was tantalizingly close to the route to what should…

  • Results, Occoneechee Mountain – 02/27/22

Well, we got lucky – it was raining all day and we had no problem with parking whatsoever. On the other hand, it was raining all day… The courses turned out to be hard and physical. Hopefully having plenty of controls and short legs between controls made it easier to deal with. Kudos to all…

  • Results, White Pines

We had a very fun event at a brand new venue — White Pines Nature Preserve. To keep things interesting, I offered three different loop courses, and people could choose how many loops they wanted to do. Most did one loop; some did two, and a few brave folks did all three. After finishing, we…

  • Cliffs of the Neuse, Results

On Sunday, we had our first official event at lovely Cliffs of the Neuse State Park. This beautiful park is about half way between the Triangle and the coast, and made a convenient stop for those coming back from the Saturday event at Shackleford. Carl Briscoe set a great yellow course and a challenging 90-minute…

  • Shackleford Banks, Results

The chilly Saturday morning in Beaufort turned downright cold as the ferry sped around the east side of Carrot Island to take our group to Shackleford Banks, the western tip of Cape Lookout National Seashore.  As the steady cold wind blew unfettered off the water onto our start location, everyone thought and thought again about…

  • Results – Open Orienteering & ARDF at Gray Owl Jan 29-30

Friday night brought at least 5″ of snow to Gray Owl, but only rain and cold to the Triangle. We ended up canceling Saturday but not everyone got the message, so 4 hearty people showed up around 11am. Not only was the ground white, but many controls were buried under the snow, especially in the…

  • Results for Open Orienteering at Umstead South Jan. 23, 2022

After snow and freezing rain closed the park altogether on Saturday we were monitoring for announcements of opening on Sunday. Finally the word came that the park would open at 10:00, so we delayed our first starts till 11:00 to allow for set out of the final controls. We had almost 40 starts and most…

  • Results, January 1, 2022 New Years Relay

On a New Years Day that was 25 degrees warmer than normal and perhaps even a bit muggy, 22 orienteers/11 teams competed in an event so new it defies categorization; it’s a Relay while at the same time being a Score O. Everyone seemed to enjoy the event and despite a potentially-confusing set of rules,…

  • Results, Birkhead Score-O

Some of the region’s best orienteers gathered on a cold rainy morning at Birkhead Mountains Wilderness for our annual long score-O. Those who chose to compete in the two hour course generally came back feeling satisfied and accomplished. Gheorghe and Vladimir both realized the same set of controls that was possible for them to visit,…

  • Results, Raven Rock, December 12

We had a fun event at Raven Rock with a meet that was geared more toward beginners than to experts. A lot of newcomers attended and hopefully enjoyed their experience enough to return to future meets and build on their skills. A reminder that beginners are welcome at all of our “open” events, and our…
