Backwoods Orienteering Klub, founded November 15, 1978 sponsors events and teaches orienteering in the North Carolina piedmont, around Raleigh, NC.

We invite you to try orienteering with us. Everyone is welcome at all our events. We always offer beginning, intermediate, advanced and expert courses (routes through the woods) at every Regular event.

We will have an Open Orienteering and Radio-O event on Saturday and Sunday, Oct 21-22.

Registration is open, register here. Be sure to check all the courses you plan to take and note the times those courses are open.

Orienteering:

  • There will be a full set of Orienteering courses – Beginner – Expert. (White – Blue)
    • White 1.6k; Yellow 2.4k; Orange 3.4; Brown 3.6; Green 5.8; Red 6.4; Blue 8.2 (just added 1k leg with good route choice options.)
    • I have done my best to offer route choice.
    • The “Rock Garden” is overgrown in the fall, so I’m not using it. I will use it next spring.
  • The same orienteering courses will be available on both Saturday and Sunday.
  • Orienteering Courses will be open from 9am to 4pm
  • Beginner Orienteering Class at 10am on Saturday& Sunday
  • Joseph & Ruth will design and set the orienteering courses

Radio-O

  • 2m Classic course on Saturday only 9am – 2pm (Be back by 2 PM)
    • 5 foxes 5.2k; 4 foxes, (2,3,4,B) 4.0k; 4 foxes (2,3,5,B) 3.0k
    • No formal 2m class – We can show you how the receiver works, but we don’t recommend that you start out on a course where the transmitters go off for 4 minutes. That gets very frustrating.
  • 80m Classic short course 2.6k Sunday only Noon-2pm
  • 80m Sprint – Very short 1.3k Saturday & Sunday 9am – Noon
    • The feature of this very short Radio-O SPRINT is that you can try to get to each control in only one, or at most two, 1 minute cycles. Practice keeping track of all five controls and getting to each one quickly (pretend that you are an elite runner)
    • The controls are all between 90 and 120 meters apart
    • With this short course you can take it either Saturday or Sunday morning and then take another course in the afternoon.
  • Beginner Radio-O classes:
    • Saturday at Noon for 80m
    • Sunday at Noon for 80m
  • Course design & set: Charles 2m & 80m Classic Courses; Joseph Sprint; Nadia Beginner Class

Pizza Dinner 4pm Saturday

  • After the event at about 4:30 on SATURDAY we will have a pizza dinner. We will order the pizza at noon and you should bring your favorite drinks.

Camping

You are welcome to camp on our property or in the wilderness area on Friday and Saturday

  • 1725 Gray Owl Road, Asheboro, NC. (35.634843, -79.881873)
  • There is a control on our mailbox at the intersection of Hopewell Friends and Gray Owl Road.
  • Drive 1/4 mile on Gray Owl and take the first left turn onto our driveway.
  • Drive 1/4 mile to the turnaround, turn around and park only on the right side (east side) of the driveway as you are heading back out. 
  • Do not drive on the grass at all! Do not park in the turnaround!
