Orienteering Raleigh NC

Backwoods Orienteering Klub, founded November 15, 1978 sponsors events and teaches orienteering in the North Carolina piedmont, around Raleigh, NC.

We invite you to try orienteering with us. Everyone is welcome at all our events. We always offer beginning, intermediate, advanced and expert courses (routes through the woods) at every Regular event.

Information For Gray Owl Weekend

November 18-19, 2017 Birkhead Wilderness Events

Pre-registration required by Saturday morning at 7:00am.  Registration form below.
Please register early because this deadline just barely gives us time to print maps.

Saturday @ Robbins Branch
(5527 Lassiter Mill Rd, Asheboro, NC 27205)

  • 11:00 – 1:00 (advanced through expert)  Orange, Brown, Green & Red Courses all have individual starts
  • There will be no White, Yellow or Beginner Class on Saturday
  • There are “score” controls at the beginning and then classic point to point for the last part of the course
  • 2:00 Course closed & Control Pickup
  • Please plan to help with control pickup.  We need to move controls from Robins Branch to Gray Owl and reset them for the night event.

Saturday at Gray Owl (1725 Gray Owl Rd.)

  • 3:00 Covered dish lunch for BOK members (Chicken provided)
  • 6:00 Mass Start Advanced Night “O”

Sunday at Gray Owl

  • 10:00 – 1:00 individual starts for all courses (beginners – expert) White through Blue
  • 10:30 beginner class
  • 1:00 Pizza lunch
  • Course closes at 2pm

Camping is available at Gray Owl – you can even sleep in the Caboose.  If you would rather be inside, toss your sleeping bag on a couch or the floor in the house.  Also, there are plenty of hotels in Asheboro.   You can shower at Gray Owl House, just bring your own towel.

Event Details:

Saturday 11:00 – 1:00:  On the expert courses the first 10 controls can be taken in any order. Red (6.8km 26 controls) competitors must visit all 10 controls.  Green (5.7km 22 controls) competitors may skip one of the first 10 controls and Brown (3.8km 17 controls) competitors can skip 3 of the first 10 controls.

The advanced (Orange) course is a normal point to point course there are no skipped controls. (3.5km 12 controls)

After the event we will go to Gray Owl for a late lunch.  Bring a dish to share if you like.  Ruth and I will provide roast chicken from KFC.

Saturday Night 6:00 mass start 90 minute time limit: This is open to everyone who has successfully completed an orange course.  There are 34 controls that can be visited in any order.  It is possible to visit all the controls in 6km.  The first digit of the control number is the point value, thus 43 is worth 4 points.  The 90 minute time limit is exact.  There is a 7 point penalty for one second over the time limit and there is a 1 point penalty at the start of each additional minute over the time limit.

Sunday 10:00 – 1:00 Open event for Beginner through Expert:  At 10:30 we will have an introduction to Orienteering class.  There are individual starts on all courses from 10:00 until 1:00 and the course closes at 2:00pm.

  • White – 12 controls 1.8km
  • Yellow – 16 controls 2.6km
  • Orange – 14 controls 3.3km
  • Brown – 12 controls 3.7km
  • Green – 17 controls 5.5km
  • Red – 17 controls 6.4km
  • Blue – 23 controls 7.8km

After the course we will have a pizza lunch.  Joseph and Ruth will provide the pizza and you can bring a dish to share if you like.

Control pickup after lunch can start as early as 2pm.
