Registration for this event is now closed
We will have an open event at Lake Crabtree County Park on March 19th. GPS 35.840409, -78.793457 or 1400 Aviation Pkwy, Morrisville, NC 27560. The event will start at the Beech Shelter which is the first shelter on the right as you enter the park. There will be no BOK signs, so look for the sign for Beech Shelter.
We will have white through red courses. We will also have an introductory Fox Orienteering course (Radio orienteering). Fox orienteering is a score format event where you choose which controls to get and what route to do it. Control circles are marked on the map and a low-powered transmitter is located within 100m of the control circle. You use standard orienteering techniques to navigate toward the control circle. Once near the circle you will pick up the nearby transmitter in your receiver and use radio direction finding to locate the control where you punch as for normal orienteering. For this event, control will be our normal flags. Competition Fox orienteering simply mounts the control box on a pole with no flags, so this is a great opportunity to learn some radio orienteering skills.
This event is open to all skill levels and there will be a beginner class at 11:30. There will be a beginner class for radio orienteering at noon. Start time slots will be between 11am and 1:30pm. We suggest beginner register for the slot right before these times to have enough time to arrive and pick up maps and rental equipment before the class(es). Beginners may also prepare themselves by watching the videos on our Newcomer Information Page.
The courses will close at 3pm. Be sure to check in at the shelter after your course so we know everyone made it back.
The available courses are:
White (beginner, 1.8km 12 controls)
Yellow (2.6km 14 controls)
Orange (3.0km 12 controls)
Brown (3.5km 8 controls)
Green (5.1km 13 controls)
Red (6.2km 15 controls)
Green and red will have two loops with a map exchange between the loops.
The Fox orienteering course will have 7 controls and an optimal length of about 2.7km. If you want to do Fox-O and also a regular orienteering course, you must register for both, but you only pay one registration fee and one finger stick rental. You will still need to rent a receiver unless you have one of our own. You need to bring your own headphones with a standard 3.5mm audio jack.
