Orienteering Raleigh NC

Backwoods Orienteering Klub, founded November 15, 1978 sponsors events and teaches orienteering in the North Carolina piedmont, around Raleigh, NC.

We invite you to try orienteering with us. Everyone is welcome at all our events. We always offer beginning, intermediate, advanced and expert courses (routes through the woods) at every Regular event.

Results: Open Gray Owl ARDF & Orienteering event on May 14-15,

Saturday started out with some steady rain, and a few hardy souls started out, but by 11am the rain stopped and the sun even began to peak out. Sunday was a beautiful day. After the events on both days we enjoyed pizza together sitting out on the deck. For the 2m Radio Orienteering, Joseph built some new timers for the transmitters, so we were able to leave them out for both days and they came on and turned off as they were supposed to.

Invitation to the event

Ruth & Joseph are hosting a 2 day, ARDF & Orienteering event on May 14-15, 2022. The event will be at their house 1725 Gray Owl Road in Asheboro. 35.634981, -79.880211. From Hopewell Friends Rd you turn onto Gray Owl Road. In 1/4 mile turn left on our driveway. In 1/4 mile, at the end of the driveway, turn around and park along the RIGHT SIDE OF THE DRIVEWAY heading out.

Starts are from 9am for expert 10am for others. Starts are available until 3pm. Courses close at 4pm.

Everyone is welcome. We have beginner through expert courses in Orienteering and ARDF. There is no formal class, so orienteering beginners should should watch these short videos:

Ruth and I will be able to answer any remaining questions and get you on your way.

Orienteering

These orienteering courses will be available on both Saturday and Sunday. (Same courses both days.)

  • Green 5.5

  • Blue 11.4k

Blue, Red, Green, Brown, and Orange start at the Rock Garden, about a 1k easy walk from the house.

For Blue, Red, Green, and Brown, the expert courses, the first 1.8k have 13 sprint-like controls in the Rock Garden at 1:4000 scale. The rest of the controls are at 1:10,000 scale 2.5m contours. Br, Gr, & Red have a 1.4k walk back from the finish. Blue finishes at the house.

For Orange, the advanced course, the first 750m has 7 sprint-like controls in the Rock Garden at 1:4000 scale. The first 6 controls are the same as the expert courses. The rest of the controls are at 1:10,000 scale 2.5m contours. Orange finishes at the house.

White, Yellow start and finish at the house.

ARDF

These 80m and 2m ARDF Classic courses will also be available on both Saturday and Sunday. (Same courses both days.)

  • 2m Classic 5 fox ARDF (60/240 timing)- 4.2k
  • 80m Classic 5 fox ARDF (30/150 timing) – 2.5k

The 80m course starts and finishes at the house. The 2m course has a1.3k walk to the start (same as the expert courses’ finish) and finishes at the house.

Pizza

We will have a pizza dinner at ~4pm. It is included with the annual pass. $10 without the annual pass. This will be both days.
