Open Orienteering and Radio Orienteering (ARDF) at Umstead South Nov. 12 & 13, 2022

Introduction

We will have two events at Umstead South on the weekend of November12-13, open orienteering on both days and Radio Orienteering (Radio-O/ARDF) on Saturday only. We do not recommend attempting both ARDF and orienteering on Saturday. If you do decide to do so anyway, you will need to register (and pay for) each separately. Note that start windows and course closing times are different for orienteering and Radio-O. The location for both events is the same.

Registration is required for all events. See details and registration links below. There is a separate announcement for the Radio Orienteering event.

Location:

Map pickup and download for both orienteering and Radio-O will be at the smaller picnic shelter at Umstead South. This is NOT the large shelter where we normally meet. It is just to the east of the parking lot. Look for signs.

Take I-40 to Harrison Ave exit 287. Go N a short distance to the parking lot. The Picnic shelter is a short walk E of the parking lot. Look for orange and white BOK signs.

If the weather is nice, parking is likely to be at a premium. Please respect the No Parking signs and park only in the designated parking lot. Plan to arrive before your start slot and be prepared to wait for parking if necessary. We will do our best to accommodate all registered participants, but parking is beyond the club’s control.

Scheduled start and closing times:

Orienteering starts will be available in half hour slots between 10am and 12 noon. Last start at 12:30.

Orienteering courses will close at 2:30pm

Note that daylight saving will be in effect and sunset will be about 5pm. Slightly early finish time is to allow for control pickup.

Beginner Instruction

Beginner orienteering instruction will be available on Saturday and Sunday at 11:00am. If you want to take the beginner class, please register for the 11:00am slot and arrive a few minutes early so you can pick up your map before the class. Please watch our video class and compass instruction so you will have the basics. Then, we can answer questions and help you get started.

Radio Orienteering instruction will be available on Saturday. More details to follow.

Registration:

Registration is required for either event on the BOK website. Register for Radio-O, Saturday orienteering or Sunday orienteering separately.

Registration for these events will close at 4pm Friday November 11.

Registration for Open orienteering on Saturday and Sunday is now closed.

Register for Saturday Radio-Orienteering

Open Orienteering Saturday & Sunday

I goofed up! I just realized that the 13 cadets that I meant to enter for Sunday’s event were registered for Saturday’s by mistake!! Can I get them switched to Sunday? If you need to move time slots, no problem. I can be reached at (619) 992-7343. I looked through my contacts, but I don’t have the email for Ian or Paul.

    Sorry for the mix up.

    Thanks,
