Backwoods Orienteering Klub, founded November 15, 1978 sponsors events and teaches orienteering in the North Carolina piedmont, around Raleigh, NC.

We invite you to try orienteering with us. Everyone is welcome at all our events. We always offer beginning, intermediate, advanced and expert courses (routes through the woods) at every Regular event.

Results for October 7th, 2012 @ Birkhead

It was a perfect weather for orienteering: not too hot, not too cold, cloudy and thank goodness, no rain.  We had a small, but hearty crowd of runners who came to enjoy the weather in the woods. The courses were set with two goals in mind: long legs between controls, but relatively easy orienteering. Given the supersize length of the courses I strove to provide catching features and hand-rails to help with navigation between control points. Alas, that did not help locating the flags in very close proximity even for the experienced orienteerers. That’s what I’ve been told.

I had one technical mistake for which I apologize: control 66 on the map was number 68 in reality. The explanation for this mishap is that Condes does not advise to use control 66 and I forgot that I enforced it in the software initially and did not update the map after changing my mind. My sincere apologies.

The other problem was more personal in nature: my dog on the loose.  I thank everyone who participated in watching him, for him and keeping me updated. I learned my lesson — next time I’ll just assign him to a volunteer for 15 minutes off their final result. 🙂
