ARDF USA Championship 2023 – Foxoring results

The cluster of thunderstorms on Thursday afternoon prevented the organizers from setting up the Fox-o course for Friday, so the start of the fox-o competition had to be delayed.

There were a few unfortunate events during the race:

  1. The information about what each transmitter would sound like was different on the map from what we had been posted in the bulletin. This caused some delay for a few competitors.
  2. The transmitters were too strong. Most people could hear them from 300 meters, some even reported 400. This made the competition much easier than it should have been.
  3. Three competitors got a map with a couple of issues: an extra start location was present and one of the transmitters was mislabeled. This meant that those competitors were listening for it on the wrong frequency. Luckily, few competitors were affected and the results didn’t have to be changed.
  4. One of the transmitters was damaged in the thunderstorms the day before and it didn’t transmit at all. This affected all the M21 and M50 competitors, roughly half of the field. Most people amazingly found the dead transmitter, some even under 4 minutes! Their success was due, at least in part, to the dead transmitter being located only 23 meters from the center of the circle in an area relatively clear of vegetation. The results below are the raw competition timings. The medal rankings were adjudicated manually, taking into account how much time people wasted around the dead transmitter.

Special prize to Norbert Linke who found the dead transmitter in 3 minutes and 2 seconds!

Results are below. The crosses on the master map indicate the approximate locations of the transmitters. Fox 1D was the transmitter killed by lightning.
