  • Results, Shackleford Banks

We orienteered for the first time at Shackleford Banks, the Western tip of Cape Lookout National Seashore. After a chilly 20-minute ferry from Beaufort, we were free to play on the 8-mile long island, with only a couple dozen other humans, and over one hundred wild horses. Many thanks to park superintendent Jeffrey West and…

  • Results: Ft. Macon

From meet director, Carl: Thank you for bringing Orienteering to the coast. This was our 3rd annual event and we enjoy helping host it. This year we changed the start location to the West end of the park due to Covid and close proximity to visitors at the Fort. Because of the location change we…

  • Results for Jan 23/24 event at Carolina North Forest

We had a successful Open and ARDF event at Carolina North Forest this past weekend. The park allowed us to run the event on both Saturday and Sunday, thus doubling the number of participants. Thus we were able to accommodate 50 runners instead of just 25. Still not everybody who wanted to attend, was able…

  • Ft. Macon, 07 Feb

On Sunday, 07 February, we will have a 90 minute score course at Ft. Macon State Park in Atlantic Beach, NC.  A ‘score course’ means that you can visit any controls that you want, in any order — but if you don’t return within 90 minutes, you will lose lots of points.  Carl Briscoe will…

  • Gray Owl Map Critique Results

We had a beautiful sunny day. 10 people ran the course and to my delight everyone thought the map was very good. There were a few minor details about different ways of interpreting an area, and some rocky ground that I missed, however I am encouraged to continue my mapping. We only had 6 controls…

  • Shackleford Banks, 06 Feb

This event is sold out, and registration is closed. We will have a small event at Shackleford Banks on Saturday, 06 February.  We are limiting registration to 25 people because of Covid and because (unless you have your own means of getting to the island) competitors will need to ride over on the same ferry. …

  • Gray Owl Event and Map Critique 1/17/21

To celebrate my first square kilometer of field checking I am hosting an expert orienteering event at Gray Owl this Sunday, January 17th. There will be Brown through Red courses. There are many more features (maybe too many) so I can make complex courses to challenge you. You can register in our store. At orienteering…

  • Open and ARDF Events at Carolina North Forest – Jan 23 and Jan 24, 2021

All of the spaces for this event have been filled, and so registration is now closed. You are welcome to come to our OPEN orienteering and ARDF events at Carolina North Forest on Saturday, Jan 23 or orienteering only on Sunday, Jan 24.  Start and finish from the parking lot at Orange Country Health Department…

  • Preliminary note about February events at the coast

We have been approved for events on Saturday, 06 February and Sunday, 07 February at Shackleford Banks and Ft. Macon, respectively. At this point, we feel that the only thing that would disrupt these plans would be severe weather that causes cancellation of the ferry to Shackleford. Details about these events should be available soon…

  • Results — Occoneechee Mtn.

On a near perfect day for orienteering, we enjoyed an expert-level event on a new map of Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area. Although it is a fairly small park, it has more than its share if interesting rocky features, steep cliffs, earth banks, and complex patterns of thick vegetation. These made the short courses pretty…
