Open Event in North Umstead (Camp Lapihio), Saturday, Oct 23, 2021

Everyone is welcome to participate in the Open event in North Umstead park on Saturday, October 23.  We will offer courses for all skill levels — from beginner (white) to expert (brown, green, red) — start will be open between noon and 2:00 PM and everybody will need to finish by 3:00 PM. Both start and finish will be located at Camp Lapihio. See detailed information below on how to get there (and where to park).

In order to participate in the event, you must preregister online before 8:00 PM on Thursday, October 21. When pre-registering sign up for a specific half-hour timeslot, during which you should arrive, pick up your map, and start your course. When 25 people have signed up for a particular slot, it will be closed and will not appear as an option when you register.

Please note also that annual passes for 2020 expired at the end of August.  In order to claim the annual pass discount when you register, you must have purchased a 2021 pass recently.  Annual passes for 2021 are available at our online store.

Covid safety.  Participants will be expected to wear a mask when interacting with people at the registration area. The start and finish for all courses will be away from the registration area. Please do not crowd the start area

Beginner’s class.  We will also provide an in-person beginner’s class at 12:15 PM. If you have never orienteered before, and would like to take this class, you should sign up for the 12:00 timeslot when you register. Plan on arriving to the park with enough time to get your map(s) and any rental equipment before attending the class.

Directions.  Park in the Camp Lapihio overflow lot (GPS coordinates = 35.859878, -78.755813). See map below. To get there, enter through the north park entrance (US-70/Glenwood Ave.).  After passing the visitor center, take your first left, as if going to the multiuse parking lot.  Shortly thereafter, take a right on the gravel Group Camp road, and stay on this road avoiding the temptation to turn left toward the multiuse lot.  The road passes underneath the powerlines and heads uphill.  At the top of the hill, stay straight, through the gate, following signs to camp Lapihio.  Approximately 500 meters after the gate, look for parking signs that will point to the right.

After you park your car follow sighs to the Start (which will be further down the road inside the camp)
