What great luck… The forecast was for heavy rain all day, but we persevered.  Charles set the controls Thursday before the event, with the transmitters timed to turn on at the right date and time. It was 75 degrees and partly cloudy for course setting. He picked the foxes up on Monday when it was 60 degrees and brilliant sunshine. The equipment worked without problems throughout the rain and performed as schedule. Nadia went out in the worst of the rain so she would be ready to teach the class at noon. The rest of us started after 10am and thankfully there was a 4 hour break in the rain.

The courses were well designed and required the universal decision whether to detour to pick up a “maybe” close control on the way to the more logical choice. The course also tested one’s strategic use of trails which is important in any championship event.

Our skills are surely improving. Everyone found all the controls they were looking for.

  1. Actually, I set the controls out on the Thursday before the Sunday event, with the transmitters timed to turn on at the right date and time. It was 75 degrees and partly cloudy for course setting. Then I picked the foxes up on Monday when it was 60 degrees and brilliant sunshine. Nadia did pick the rainiest time to run her course though.

An interesting note: all eleven competitors found all of the foxes on their courses, whether it was three or five. And Gheorghe’s time for finding all five foxes must have set some kind of US record, I think.

  2. Other interesting notes:

This was Jonathan Kross’ first regulation course. Nadia suggested that he find only three, but Jonathan went for all five foxes. He finished less than 2 minutes out of third place. That despite losing several cycles due to confusion caused by the beginner transmitters.

And Erin Hammer, who I think this was only her 3rd classic course, finished in 3rd place, just 2 minutes out of 2nd place on the 3-fox course. Fantastic!
