Orienteering Raleigh NC

Backwoods Orienteering Klub, founded November 15, 1978 sponsors events and teaches orienteering in the North Carolina piedmont, around Raleigh, NC.

We invite you to try orienteering with us. Everyone is welcome at all our events. We always offer beginning, intermediate, advanced and expert courses (routes through the woods) at every Regular event.

Results – Umstead North, April 9, 2023

This event has been a true team effort.

History: this event had been planned for April 2nd. However, the Park management noticed a conflict with the big Umstead 100 race, so we were forced to change to a different date. Easter Sunday was not ideal, but since we didn’t have an alternate location ready for April 2nd, we had the choice of going for it, or postponing.

Mihai had designed the courses and set up the far controls on Thursday, under heavy rain. The rest was set up early Sunday, when the sun was out, but the streams were still pretty high.

Paul, Matt, Adalia, Tatyana and Vladimir worked on registration/start/finish throughout the day.

We were lucky that the weather turned just a few hours before the event. So we got to enjoy a nice sunny day in wet woods. Creeks and ditches were overflown with water, but it didn’t prevent runners from enjoying interesting courses. Some of the trails had standing water, which made for a rather splashy experience.

On Red course competitors had to cross the Sycamore creek. The choice was simple: try to cross using a rather precarious tree or brave the current. In the end both approaches worked just fine and no-one drowned 🙂
